Buckstay

A rope or stay that helps support a mast or spar on a ship, running from the mast to the deck or gunwale.

From 'buck' (a support or brace) and 'stay' (a rope securing rigging). This nautical term developed as sailing vessels became larger and more complex, requiring more sophisticated rigging systems.
