A city in northern Somalia, historically an important port and trading center on the Gulf of Aden.
From Somali 'Burao' or 'Borao', of uncertain ultimate origin, possibly from Arabic influence, the city became prominent during the Middle Ages as a hub for Indian Ocean trade.
