Secondary products created when making something else, often less valuable than the main product but still useful or profitable.

Formed from 'by-' (alongside, secondary) and 'product' (something produced), literally meaning products made 'by' the process rather than as the main goal. Common in industrial chemistry and manufacturing since the 19th century.
