Cadet

/kəˈdɛt/ noun

A cadet is a young person who is training to become an officer in the military, police, or a similar organization. It can also refer to a member of a youth program with military-style training.

From French 'cadet' meaning 'younger son,' especially one who sought a career in the army because he would not inherit family property. The word shifted from describing the person’s family position to describing his role as a trainee officer. English borrowed it along with many military terms from French.
