A tropical fruit tree native to the Caribbean and Central America, also called star apple, bearing round purple or white fruits.

From Taíno (Caribbean Arawakan) origin, possibly related to indigenous names for this fruit, adopted into Spanish and English from indigenous Caribbean languages.
