A tropical hardwood tree native to Central America, valued for its dark red or purple dye-producing heartwood, also called logwood or bloodwood.

From the Campeche region in Mexico (from Mayan origins), where this valuable tree was abundant; the tree and dye both took their name from the geographic location.
