Canning

/ˈkænɪŋ/ noun

The process of preserving food by sealing it in containers, typically metal cans or glass jars. A method of food preservation that prevents spoilage.

From 'can' (the container) plus the gerund suffix '-ing'. The process was developed in the early 19th century by Nicolas Appert and Peter Durand, with the word emerging as the practice became widespread. Named directly after the containers used in the process.
