A soldier who operates or fires a cannon; an artillery gunner.

From French 'canonnier,' derived from 'canon' (cannon) plus -eer suffix (meaning 'one who operates'). The -eer suffix is also found in 'musketeer' and 'auctioneer,' borrowed from French.
