A soft, usually brimless hat, or the top or lid that covers something like a bottle or pen.

It comes from Old English 'cæppe', influenced by Latin 'cappa', meaning a hood or cloak. Over time, the idea narrowed from any head covering or hood to the smaller hat and then to any kind of top or lid.
