Capstan

/ˈkæpstən/ noun

A cylindrical machine on ships used for winding cables and hauling heavy loads, operated by multiple sailors pushing horizontal bars.

From Portuguese 'cabrestante' or Spanish 'cabestrante', which comes from Latin 'caput' (head) and possibly 'stans' (standing). The device got its name from rotating around a central post.
