A type of cancer that begins in the skin or in the tissues that line organs inside the body.
It comes from Latin and Greek 'karkinoma', meaning 'cancerous tumor', from 'karkinos', 'crab'. The crab image was used in ancient medicine because the swollen veins around a tumor looked like a crab’s legs.
