Carettochelydidae

A family of freshwater turtles consisting mainly of the Australasian snapping turtle, an ancient and primitive group.

From the genus *Carettochelys* (combining *caretta* 'carted-headed' and Greek 'chelys' 'turtle') plus the Latin taxonomic family suffix '-idae'. The name combines the loggerhead genus name with the Greek word for turtle.
