Carpool

An arrangement where people share rides in the same vehicle to save money and reduce traffic.

Coined during World War II when gasoline and rubber rationing made sharing cars essential for the war effort. The 'pool' part comes from the idea of pooling resources, like a betting pool or typing pool. The U.S. government actively promoted carpooling with propaganda posters asking 'Is this trip necessary?' to conserve fuel for military use.
