Plural form of carposporangium; structures in red algae that produce and contain carpospores, the microscopic reproductive bodies.

From 'carpospore' + 'angium' (container, from Greek 'angeion'). The plural developed from Latin botanical nomenclature conventions in 19th-century phycology.
