A synthetic or imitation fabric designed to resemble or mimic the appearance and feel of genuine cashmere wool.

From 'cashmere' plus the diminutive or imitative suffix '-ette,' meaning a lesser or artificial version. Emerged as synthetic fibers became common in the 20th century.
