Catbrier

/ˈkætˌbraɪər/ noun

A thorny, climbing vine or shrub (Smilax) with prickly stems and broad leaves, common in eastern North America.

From 'cat' + 'brier' (from Old English 'brær'). Called 'catbrier' because the prickles are sharp and fierce like a cat's claws, or possibly because cats would climb it.
