Catharsis

The process of releasing and thereby providing relief from strong, repressed emotions; emotional purification through art.

From Greek 'katharsis' (cleansing/purging), from 'kathairein' (to cleanse). Aristotle argued that tragedy purges the audience's emotions of pity and fear through catharsis — you leave the theater LIGHTER.
