Catnip

/ˈkætˌnɪp/ noun

A plant that produces a strong scent cats find irresistible and exciting; anything that someone finds extremely attractive or hard to resist.

From 'cat' + 'nip' (possibly from 'catmint'). The plant is Nepeta cataria, a member of the mint family native to Europe. Cats' attraction to it was documented in the Middle Ages, and the term became established in English by the 17th century.
