Characterstring

In computing, a sequence of characters (letters, numbers, symbols) treated as a single unit or data type.

From character (in the sense of a single letter or symbol, from Greek charaktēr) plus string (from Old Norse strengr, meaning 'cord' or 'line'). A modern technical compound created for computing terminology.
