The act or habit of chattering; continuous idle talk or the sound of repeated clicking or rattling.

From chatter (Middle English from Old Norse origin meaning to make rapid sounds) + -ation (Latin suffix forming nouns of action). The term evolved to describe both the sound itself and the behavior of talking excessively.
