Chinook

/ʃɪˈnʊk/ noun

A warm, dry wind that descends the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, capable of raising temperatures by 20°C in hours; also called a snow eater.

Named after the Chinook people of the Pacific Northwest. These föhn-type winds can melt a foot of snow in a single day. In 1943, a chinook raised Spearfish, South Dakota's temperature by 27°C in two minutes.
