Chitin

/ˈkaɪtən/ noun

A tough, flexible polysaccharide that forms the primary structural component of arthropod exoskeletons, fungal cell walls, and some other biological structures. It provides strength and protection while remaining lightweight.

From Greek 'chiton' meaning tunic or covering, referring to the protective layer it forms. The chemical compound was first identified and named by French scientist Henri Braconnot in 1811 when studying insect shells.
