Relating to or located on the coast; near or by the sea. Characteristic of areas where land meets ocean.

From Latin 'costa' meaning 'rib' or 'side,' which came to mean the side of land next to water. The word entered English via Old French 'coste' in the 14th century, with the adjective form 'coastal' appearing much later.
