to repair or make something quickly and roughly, or to pave a surface with round stones called cobblestones.

Origin uncertain but possibly from 'cob' (a lump or rounded mass), combined with the diminutive '-le' suffix, or from Old French 'coble.' Originally meant to mend shoes, then expanded to any rough repair work.
