Commensalism

/kəˈmɛnsəˌlɪzəm/ noun

A symbiotic relationship between two species where one benefits while the other is neither helped nor harmed. The benefiting species gains resources or advantages without affecting its partner.

From Latin 'com-' (together) and 'mensa' (table), literally meaning 'eating at the same table.' Coined by Belgian zoologist Pierre-Joseph van Beneden in 1876 to describe relationships where one organism benefits from another's activities.
