Competitive advantage

A unique attribute or capability that allows an organization to outperform its competitors and achieve superior market position.

Popularized by Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter in the 1980s, though the underlying concept is much older. 'Competitive' comes from Latin competere (to strive together), while 'advantage' derives from French avantage (benefit or superiority).
