To concentrate is to focus your attention or effort on one thing and avoid distractions. In science, it can also mean to increase the strength of a substance by removing extra liquid or other parts.

From Latin 'concentrare', from 'com-' ('together') and 'centrum' ('center'), meaning 'to bring to a center'. It entered English via French in the 1600s.
