A person who is drafted into military service (noun) or to enroll someone compulsorily into the armed forces (verb). Someone whose name has been written on the official military rolls.
From Latin conscriptus, past participle of conscribere, combining con- (together, with) + scribere (to write). Originally meant 'to write together' or 'to enroll by writing names together on a list.' The military sense developed because soldiers' names were literally written together on enrollment lists.
