From Latin conservare meaning 'to keep, preserve', from com- meaning 'together' and servare meaning 'to watch, keep safe'. Originally (16th century) meant any place for preservation, evolving to describe glass structures for protecting plants (17th century) and later schools for preserving and cultivating artistic traditions (18th century).
