Core collapse

/kɔr kəˈlæps/ noun

The catastrophic gravitational collapse of a massive star's core when nuclear fuel is exhausted and radiation pressure can no longer support the star against its own gravity. This process occurs in less than a second and leads to supernova explosions.

From Latin 'cor' meaning heart and 'collapsus' meaning fallen together. The term developed in the 1960s as astronomers understood the mechanism behind Type II supernovae.
