Creatinine

/kriˈætɪniːn/ noun

A waste product of muscle metabolism that is filtered by the kidneys and used as a marker of kidney function. Elevated blood creatinine levels indicate decreased kidney function.

From Greek 'kreas' meaning 'flesh' or 'meat' and the suffix '-inine,' referring to its origin from muscle tissue. The compound was first isolated from meat extract in 1832 by French chemist Michel Chevreul.
