The process of preparing and using land for growing crops; the development or improvement of something through care and effort.

From Medieval Latin 'cultivatio' from 'cultivare' meaning to till or inhabit, from 'cultus' (tended, cultivated). The metaphorical sense of developing skills or culture emerged from agricultural practices.
