A portmanteau (blended word) of 'cybernetic' and 'organism', coined in 1960 by scientists Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline to describe an enhanced human for space travel. The word became famous through science fiction, particularly the 1960s TV show 'The Six Million Dollar Man'.
