Debutante

A young woman making her formal entrance into society, traditionally at age 18 through a special presentation or ball.

From French 'débutante,' feminine of 'débutant' (beginner), from 'débuter' (to begin). The social custom originated in European courts and was adopted by American high society in the 19th century.
