To burn away rapidly with intense heat and a fierce, crackling flame; to cause to burn in this way.

From Latin 'deflagrare' — 'de-' (down/away) + 'flagrare' (to burn fiercely). The same root as 'flagrant' and 'conflagration.' Fireworks deflagrate; they burn without detonating.
