A significant disturbance or interruption that breaks up the normal flow or continuity of something. Disruptions often involve more substantial interference than simple interruptions and may cause lasting changes.

From Latin 'disrumpere' (to break apart), from 'dis-' (apart) and 'rumpere' (to break). Originally described physical breaking apart, but expanded to include any forceful interruption of normal patterns or systems.
