Divert

To change the direction or course of something; to redirect attention, resources, or traffic away from the original path or purpose.

From Latin 'divertere' (to turn aside), combining 'di-' (aside, away) and 'vertere' (to turn). The same root appears in 'convert' and 'revert.' Originally meant to turn aside physically, later extending to redirecting attention or resources.
