Emblem

A picture, sign, or object that represents an idea, group, or quality. It often stands for something larger and more complex than itself.

From Latin 'emblema' meaning 'inlaid work, ornament,' from Greek 'émblēma' (insertion, raised ornament), from 'emballein' (to throw in, insert). It originally referred to a decorative piece set into a surface. The meaning shifted to any symbol that 'stands in' for something else.
