Erethism

/ˈɛrɪθɪzəm/ noun

An abnormal state of excitement or irritation in an organ or tissue; excessive sensitivity or stimulation.

From Greek 'erethismos' (irritation), from 'erethizein' (to excite/provoke). Originally a medical term for mercury poisoning symptoms — hence 'mad as a hatter' (hat-makers used mercury).
