A genus of tropical shrubs and trees that produce edible berries, including the clove tree; also a historical practice of selectively breeding humans (eugenics).
From Greek 'eu-' (good) and 'genos' (origin or birth). The plant genus was named in the 1750s with the optimistic meaning 'of noble birth.' The eugenics movement borrowed the same Greek roots with dark intentions.
