Fast-flying birds of prey with sharp talons and keen eyesight, often trained to hunt other birds for sport.

From Latin 'falco,' possibly deriving from 'falx' meaning scythe or sickle, referring to the bird's curved talons. Falconry became a status symbol in medieval Europe, with different social classes allowed to hunt with different falcon species.
