Present participle of fax; the act of sending documents electronically over telephone lines using facsimile technology.

From 'facsimile', Latin for 'make similar' (facere 'to make' + similis 'like'). Shortened to 'fax' in the 1940s when the technology became more widespread. The verb form developed naturally as the technology became common in offices.
