Fishing

Fishing is the activity of catching fish, either for food, for work, or for fun. It can be done with a line and hook, a net, or other tools, in rivers, lakes, or the ocean.

“Fishing” comes from Old English “fiscian,” meaning “to catch fish.” The root “fish” goes back to Proto-Germanic “*fiskaz,” showing this was an important idea in early northern European cultures.
