Moving or shining with a quick, unsteady light that appears and disappears; wavering in brightness or intensity.

From 'flicker' (possibly onomatopoetic origin, related to Old English 'flacorian'). The present participle 'flickering' has been used since at least the 1600s, describing flames, candles, and later electric lights.
