Foyer

A foyer is the entrance hall or open area just inside the main door of a building, such as a house, theater, or hotel. It is where people first come in and often wait or meet others.

From French “foyer” meaning “hearth” or “home,” from Latin “focus” (fireplace). The meaning shifted from the warm center of a home to the welcoming entrance space.
