Free exercise clause

/fri ˈɛksərˌsaɪz klɔz/ noun phrase

The second part of the First Amendment's religion clauses, which prohibits Congress from making laws 'prohibiting the free exercise' of religion. It protects individuals' rights to practice their religious beliefs without government interference.

From Latin 'exercitium' (practice or training). The clause was influenced by colonial experiences of religious persecution and the Founders' belief that religious conscience should be beyond government control.
