To stare at something openly and stupidly, usually because you're surprised or fascinated.

Of uncertain origin, possibly from the dialectal English word 'gaw' meaning to gaze. The '-ck' ending was added for emphasis in 17th century English, similar to how 'gape' became 'gawp' in British English.
