The complete set of DNA, including all genes and non-coding sequences, found in an organism's cells. It contains all the genetic information needed to build and maintain that organism.

Coined in 1920 by German botanist Hans Winkler, combining 'gene' and the suffix '-ome' (meaning complete set). The term gained prominence during the Human Genome Project in the 1990s.
