Get the show on the road

To begin an activity or project; to start moving forward with plans that have been discussed or prepared.

This phrase originated in American theater and circus culture of the early 1900s, when traveling shows literally had to 'get on the road' to move between towns. It became popular slang by the 1940s for starting any kind of activity or venture.
