Gloom

Partial or total darkness; a state of depression or despondency characterized by low spirits.

From Middle English 'gloom', possibly from Middle Low German 'gloom' meaning 'twilight'. The word originally described the physical state of dim light before extending metaphorically to describe dark moods and emotional states.
